December is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. This year AIDS Awareness Week will begin on 24 November 2024 and end on 30 November . The aim of World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week is to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS, and the need for the development of education and prevention initiatives.
The Australian Government’s World AIDS Day campaign supports the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy – Revitalising Australia’s Response – (the Strategy). The goal of the Strategy is to reduce HIV transmission and to minimise the personal and social impacts of HIV infection. The national theme for the 2024 World AIDS Day campaign is: ‘HIV/AIDS: Let’s talk about it.’ HIV/AIDS is still a major health issue with no known cure. HIV/AIDS has not gone away and Australians need to be informed and reminded that we should not be complacent but remain responsible for ourselves, vigilant with prevention and supportive of those who have HIV/AIDS. The theme this year aims to educate people and raise awareness that prevention is the best cure for HIV/AIDS. It also aims to inform people about the help that is available for those who need it, and that people living with HIV/AIDS deserve acceptance, encouragement and understanding.
The Australian Government and State and Territory Governments have provided joint funding to support Australia’s national World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week campaigns since 1998. This site provides information about health services, events and the 2024 Australian campaign theme: “ HIV/AIDS
